-- confirming vote or a vote to deny the confirmation of john kerry, you know, chuck hagel, john brennan, jack lew? >> well, fortunately, i'm going to be in a position where i'm on the armed services committee, and the foreign relations committee, so i'll get a chance to question both senators kerry and hagel, and i look forward to hearing them answer some of the tough questions that have been raised. that's what the confirmation process is about. >> do you have concerns about chuck hagel from what you know so far? >> you know, i think senator hagel deserves all of our admiration for his service in vietnam, for his service to the country as a senator from nebraska, and he would be the only enlisted man who has ever served in the military to become secretary of defense if he gets confirmed, but i do have some serious questions for him about how he would implement the amendment that i just put into the defense authorization bill to make sure that women in the military who are victims of rape or incest are able to access reproductive health services and get the same coverage that other women thro
nominee john brennan and incoming secretary of state john kerry represent a shift in the way the u.s. wages war and the president's attempts to put an imprint on u.s. foreign policy. today, hagel will have his first chance to publicly respond to his critics, in a 112-page questionnaire requested by the committee, hagel begins to do that on iran and israel. this is what he said in the questionnaire, and he'll be questioned about this today. on the questionnaire, i am committed to considering all options to counter iran and its aggression and to maintain u.s. support for missile defense systems in israel. translation, he's for unilateral military action if necessary against iran. more. "if iran continues to flout its international obligations, it should continue to face severe and growing consequences. while there is time and space for diplomacy, backed by pressure, the window is closing." this is what he says on gay rights in the questionnaire, "i fully support gay and lesbian women serving openly in the u.s. military and am committed to a full implementation of the repeal of don't
brennan nomination until he gets answers on benghazi and the attack in libya. what about john brennan's nomination? >> he has criticism from the left and the right. >> he has been depicted as picking and choosing the target. he has criticism from the right. whether he participated in the leak. the underwear bomber sent out to castigate those who question whether or not the underwear bomber should have been read the miranda rights. he serve served in the bush administration. they will about support for enhanced interrogation, lindsey graham from the right and variety of characters from the left. at the end of the day he will be confirmed. a lot of serious questions asked. is he a steady solid operator or the publicity hot dog he has been for the last couple of years in the position as counterterrorism director. he has been the principal source for a good movie. >> bret: the questions about leaks may come up in the nomination hearing as well. >> this is the second toughest one but it will get through. this is leverage to get the questions, the republicans want answered on benghazi. and
the best in chuck hagel, john brennan, and senator kerry and that as the president looks to fill these other positions, finding the best is what will guide him. wolf? >> the president also has an important visit with the afghan president hamid karzai. what do they hope to accomplish? >> reporter: that's right, wolf. they will have a bilateral meeting. you can already see the flag of afghanistan flying over the blair house. that is where he will be staying while here in washington. we're told by white house aides that they will be talking about security, political and the economic transition. that, of course, is very key as the u.s. looks to 2014 to withdrawing from afghanistan. they will be talking about what the u.s. footprint will look like in afghanistan after 2014. they will have their bilateral meeting and also a working lunch and then a joint press conference, wolf. >> we'll be watching that. thanks very much, dan lothian. >>> all right. this just coming in to "the situation room." new photos of a retired fbi agent who's been missing since 2007. robert levin son's family re
nominated counterterrorism expert at the white house john brennan. we'll talk about both of them with david sanger of the "new york times" and mark halperin of "time" magazine. >> both mr. brennan and chuck hagel are coming in at exactly the moment when the light footprint strategy has begun to hit some real resistance. the u.s. has not figured out how to intervene in syria in an effective way. it's obviously run into some difficulties in the end of its cyber campaign for now in iran or at least we think it has. so the question is whether or not these two men working together can sort of forge some very new and different ways. >> one of the reasons people have liked chuck hagel over the years, a lot of reasons reporters like him, a lot of reasons his supporters like him is he's a free-speaking guy. he's iconoclastic. he's willing to say things and think about things in a way that's outside not just party orthodoxy but out of the mainstream foreign policy establishment. >> rose: we conclude with a conversation about politics and economics and debt ceilings and fiscal cliffs and sequestration
, welcome, everybody. the starting point, the president's pick to run the cia. john brennan, top adviser on counterterrorism. is he ready for the job? and prepare for a fight on the president's pick for defense secretary. some will fight the choice of the former republican senator chuck hagel for the job. >>> and the car of the future just might be here already. details about the new self-driving car. >> is it fighting irish or roll tide? college football champ will be crowned. what about the pros? major second guessing after a football star goes down. >> and the lineup this morning, newark mayor cory booker will join us, chris murphy, connie mack and mary bono mack and mike and mike in the morning are our guests. and "starting point" begins right now. welcome, everybody. this just in to cnn. the white house naming long-time cia official and top counterterrorism adviser john brennan as high-profile conservatives are declaring war so to speak for the president's pick for defense secretary. chuck hagel for nebraska. let's get to jill daugherty. let's start with brennan. first, give us info
hagel. he chose counterterrorism advisor john brennan to head the c.i.a.. >> chuck hagel is the leader that our troops deserve. he is an american patriot, he enlisted in the army and volunteered for vietnam. as the young private and then sergeant he served with honor alongside his own brother. he'd be the first person of enlisted rank to serve as secretary of defense. one of the few secretaries who've been wounded in war and the first vietnam veteran to lead the department. a 25-year veteran of the c.i.a. god knows what our national security demands. intelligence that provides policymakers with the facts, strong analytic insights and the keen understanding of a dynamic world. given his extensive experience and travel which is include, by the way, traveling through arabian peninsula where he camped with tribesmen in the desert john has an invaluable perspective on the forces, the history, the culture, the politics, the economics, the desire for human dig anyty driving so much of the changes in today's world. >> rose: joining me now for a conversation about the president's announcement,
.s. senate and he's been an adviser to him now in the white house and then john brennan at cia, someone who's been by his side for four years. >> what is the strategy? first read mentions jack reid and the statement praising chuck hagel. what's the strategy? you have people wondering why not take up the fight for susan rice and how are the dynamics different? >> as chuck todd pointed out, there are as many as ten different democratic senators opposed to chuck hagel and it's going to be up to the white house to wage a significant campaign using some democrats like senator jack reid from rhode island to win them over. the white house probably decided that they needed to go ahead and fight for chuck hagel in this matter. i've heard from the white house that the susan rice and john kerry were pretty much tied folks going in to that state department gig. president obama going with john kerry but you are seeing the white house going for a full throttled fight to get and to win chuck hagel and not going to be easy. >> mark murray, thank you so much. happy new year. see you tomorrow. >> thanks. >>>
to be a big week for white house staff announcements. president obama will nominate john brennan as an ex-c.i.a. director. that could happen as soon as today. brennan previously spent 25 years at the spy agency. mike morrell is acting director. he replaced general petraeus who resigned over an extra marital affair. today we'll begin to hear all of the evidence against the colorado movie massacre. the judge will then decide if the case should go to trial. holmes is accused of killing 12 people, injuring dozens more in that shooting last july. secretary of state hillary clinton heading back to work today. a few hours from now clinton will return to the state department. she was released five days ago from a hospital for treatment of a potentially life threatening blood clot. many lawmakers still demanding secretary clinton testify about the benghazi libya terror attack before they vote on john kerry as her successor. >>> look at what's left of this car that had a six-month-old baby inside when it ran a stop sign and collided with a pickup truck. this is in the state of maine. cops say even
to mention is john brennan. john brennan is going to be nominated to head the cia probably today. brennan is very close to the president. i'm told that if there's one person he relies on in the most secret inner debates, it's john brennan who's been his chief counterterrorism and intelligence adviser. john brennan is going to go over to run the cia. in the three branches, he'll have people who were his people. you couldn't say that about gates. he couldn't say that about secretary clinton. and now have that team. and i think that's, again, don't think entirely about the fight ahead. think about what he's trying to accomplish with this group. why he wants them. >> that is the question.brennan goes as planned. what would that mean for the direction of u.s. foreign policy and the president's foreign policy doctrine, and how would it differ from the first four years? >> what that tells you, i think, mika, is this president is serious about completing this process of withdrawal of u.s. troops. kerry and hagel have both spoken very forcefully about ending the combat role in afghanistan. it rein
-terrorism chief john brennan for cia director. controversy surrounds hagel because of opposition to troop surges in iraq and afghanistan, and some of his positions on israel. the president cited one main reason for both of his picks. >> my number one criteria in making these decisions was simple, who is going to do the best job in securing america? these two leaders have dedicated their lives to protecting our country. i'm confident they will do an outstanding job. i urge the senate to confirm them as soon as possible so we can keep our nation secure and the american people safe. >> now, there's something to be said for how a president picks cabinet nominees, cabinet secretaries, in his second term. let's bring in author and presidential historian, douglas brinkley, professor of history, fellow at rice university and author of a thousand books, last i checked. thank you for being with us. as you just heard, the president wanted to be seen as tough, particularly as tough on terrorism, these two men seem to fit the bill. what's the issue about the president appointing just anybody he wants? why is
-year cia vet john brennan to lead the central intelligence agency and former nebraska senator chuck hagel to take over at the pentagon where he will presumably join senator john kerry at state to form the nuke leus of president obama's second term foreign policy team. the decision to nominate hagel continued to rankel some in the gop. >> chuck hagel is out of the mainstream of thinking i believe on most issues regarding foreign policy. he has long severed his ties with the republican party. this is an in your face nomination by the president to all of us who are supportive of israel. chuck hagel, if confirmed to be secretary of defense, would be the most antagonistic secretary of defense toward the state of israel in our nation's history. >> if confirmed, hagel would be the first enlisted soldier to run the pentagon, but while the decorated vietnam veteran, a recipient of not one, but two purple hearts, is sure to betop popular among the rank-and-file, one of the primary tasks facing the next secretary of defense will be slimming the military budget, something hagel has had no qualm
. >> with upcoming hearings for chuck hagel and john brennan, the current focus on foreign policy is likely to continue, although the question still lingers, what is the obama doctrine, or more to the point, is there an obama doctrine? according to the economist the president's main goal is to avoid costly international enfanglements as he prioritizes concerns. it is a tricky endeavor given the state of the world. in addition to the crisis in syria and the nuclear standoff between israel and iran, there are new protests in egypt where nearly 60 people have died and in mali the u.s. has been assisting french and african forces to push back al qaeda linked militants in the northern half of the country. for now officials say they envision flying only unarmed surveillance drones from the base, though they have not ruled out conducting missile strikes at some point if the threat worsens. joining now from cairo is nbc news foreign correspondent amman mojadine. >> we talk about the obama doctrine and the difficulties in articulating a broad set of foreign policy goals. that is infinitely compounde
a role by the senators. >> schieffer: what about john brennan, the nominee for the cia. your friend lindsay graham says he should not be confirmed until we know more about the attack in libya. are you going to -- >> i think lipid lindsay's right. it's been months now and we still haven't gotten basic information. how were the talking points that were given ambassador rice to tell the american people. and on this program why weren't there dod assets for seven hours capable. there's so many questions that have not been answered, and lindsay's right. in the case of mr. brennan mr. brennan says he oppose torture but there are statements where he basically supported it. and finally as you know, there was an investigation, there is an investigation ongoing about the leaks after the takeout of osama bin laden and mr. brennan was there in the whitehouse and some of those leaks came out. we need to know the results of that investigation as well. there are a lot of questions that need to be asked. i look forward to the hearings. i have always believed that a president deservelz the deserves t
, like john brennan, which is controversial in some quarters, and john kerry are getting less attention. i would like to comment on the gay rights. i was the only journalist who happened to have written about chuck hagel's views on gay issues years ago because i had conversations with him about my own views that at the time we were still pursuing translators working in intelligence agencies and the defense department and trying to purge them from military service. i had a discussion with him about that and about and don't ask, don't tell. they were attempting to sort out how you would sort through. hagel made clear his support for repealing don't ask, don't tell. i want to be clear that he is saying, and i don't think it is just a move that he has apologized to hormel, and hormel as very graciously accepted his apology, and in addition, senator hagel said he supports lgbt families and the alignment as part of don't ask, don't tell repeal. he also has statements on women's rights and abortion. one of the subjects we do not talk about often is violence against women and in the military, r
's going to sign those nominations we've heard about, john brennan to be director of the cia, hagel to be secretary of defense, jack lew to be secretary of the treasury. >> senator hagel and vice president biden all served with the president. he knows all of them well. senator hagel in for the toughest fight in the senate. the president sounded by the joint inaugural committee there. >> there we go. and i'm setting a few nominations up which i know will be dealt with with grace. >> ah. >> it's still there. >> yes. >> of course, he's probably referring to senator hagel, his nomination right there. >> yi, the wish of triumph over possible reality here. i want to go to david in a minute. stand by, david. >> secretary of state and mr. john brennan of virginia. there you go. >> so thank you very much, everybody. i look forward to it. [ applause ] >> so, david, you've written so much about the personal private barack obama. what did you see during that speech? >> barack obama unleashed. barack obama, these two inaugural addresses to me they reflect roosevelt in '33 coming in dark time, pe
from the chuck hagel nomination. other nominations light john brennan, which is controversial in some quarters, but also john kerry are getting lost attention. -- getting less attention. i had conversations with him two years ago about my own views. at the time we are still pursuing -- i had a discussion with hagel about "don't ask, don't tell." it had not been repealed yet. he made very clear his support about the repeal. i did talk to him about this and just want to be clear that he is saying that's it is not just a move that he is apologizing hormell. in addition, he supports lgbt families. he is gone beyond that on women's issues as well. one of the real other subjects we do not often talk about is violence towards women. rates at the academies, rapes in the field. the senate passed an amendment as part of the national defence act giving women who were raped -- i think he is stepping forward. you will hear more about this in the hearings. i think it is important to realize that, like the president, he is a fault on many issues. this is not a move that was triggered by the nominati
with the others down the road. >> reporter: yeah, and john brennan for cia is going to be a lot about benghazi, a lot about the drone program, and a lot of questions that we likely are going to be very interested in hearing in that hearing. martha: absolutely. bret, thank you very much. >> reporter: you got it. martha: see you tonight. bill: i can't remember the last time we saw theresa hines kerry. it's been a longtime. martha: yes it has. bill: you reached out to a number of senators. what did they tell but this hearing and what we can expect? >> reporter: they seem to think that essentially john kerry shares the president's philosophy, and so it's the privilege of the president to get a cabinet team around him essentially that will carry out his wishes, and so they felt like he has plenty of experience, he's obviously one of the veterans on capitol hill, someone who has been here a very longtime. they didn't see anything in his background that necessarily would be a red flag. obviously you ask the questions, you want to know what he sees going forward in terms of leading the state departmen
. senator kerry, senator hagel, john brennan at cia. this is his team. hillary clinton was picked, as good as she was as secretary of state. he inherited bob gates as secretary of defense. he now has the people in place to do what he wants to do for his own legacy. i think one of those things is we'll be withdrawing from afghanistan and avoid getting into any new wars. with this team, the bar will be set pretty high for a third middle eastern war whether it has to do with iran or syria. >> carl bernstein? >> this is about having obama's own foreign policy that has been said, but something driving a lot of the opposition to hagel and that is his pronouncements about israel. i can say this perhaps because i'm jewish that the american/jewish community and the u.s. congress has got to stop confusing the party with israel. netanyahu are not israel. the so-called american jewish lobby is not israel. israel is a great democracy and divided down the middle the same way we are and the idea as one of the senators from texas said a bit ago that the obama administration doesn't want to deny iran the n
